Larger loads moved more easily over sea.

Merchants could transport larger, heavier loads less expensively by sea than over land. In the 12th and 13th centuries, ships like the Java Sea Shipwreck carried spices and other perishables, as well as Chinese silk and ceramics, in enormous volumes.
