Larger loads moved more easily over sea.

Merchants could transport larger, heavier loads less expensively by sea than over land. In the 12^th and 13^th centuries, ships like the Java Sea Shipwreck carried spices and other perishables, as well as Chinese silk and ceramics, in enormous volumes.
