Guardians and bodhisattvas

Bodhisattva, god, and goddess

The Buddha came to China accompanied by a host of attendants and enlightened beings called bodhisattvas. Over time, Guanyin became the most popular of these, and took on aspects of figures from other religions, including Christianity, as well as traits of local Chinese deities.
