Zhou rulers weaken, local leaders gain strength

By the late 8th century BC, the Zhou controlled China from the Yellow to the Yangtze Rivers. People living within these vast territories shared certain rituals, art, and architecture. But, over time, fighting erupted inside the Zhou states as local leaders gained strength and began competing for power and land.
